Baby’s Growth in the First Trimester

2 month pregnant baby size | stages of pregnancy first trimester | baby growth chart during pregnancy | stages of fetal development | how much does baby grow in first trimester

Hi Girls,

We all get to know about the good news at different weeks of our 1st month of pregnancy, but one thing which is common between all of us is the moment we get the news of our little one coming soon, we start picturising the image of  baby in our mind .

Since, we all can only see the baby in an ultrasound which is done at the completion of 2 months of pregnancy till then we can only think about it! Our mind quickly starts imagining oh! How my baby would be looking like at this time, what size the baby would be at this time, when will I be able to hear a heartbeat of my baby and so on...

Well, I am also a Mama to be soon, & trying to figure out these queries in my mind on a daily basis. Since, today when writing this blog, I am still 4 days away from my first ultrasound which will be held on 24th September when I will be completing 2 months I have gained much information about how my baby should be looking like by this time .

Let me share some of my findings point wise below for you so that it will be easy for you to understand .

During the first 13 weeks, our baby changes from a fertilized egg into a fully-formed fetus. All the major organs and systems are taking shape. That means our baby could be harmed if you use street drugs, have an illness, or get exposed to radiation.

Here’s what’s actually happening inside our womb:

Month 1 (weeks 1 through 4)

As the fertilized egg grows, a water-tight sac forms around it, gradually filling with fluid. This is called the amniotic sac, and it helps cushion the growing embryo.

During this time, the placenta also develops. The placenta is a round, flat organ that transfers nutrients from the mother to the fetus, and transfers wastes from the fetus. Think of the placenta as a food source for the fetus throughout your pregnancy.

In these first few weeks, a primitive face will take form with large dark circles for eyes. The mouth, lower jaw and throat are developing. Blood cells are taking shape, and circulation will begin. The tiny “heart” tube takes shape and begins to beat. You can hear it on ultrasound as early as week 6. It beats 90-110 times per minute.

By the end of the first month, the fetus is about 1/4 inch long – smaller than a grain of rice.

Month 2 (weeks 5 through 8)

Facial features continue to develop. Each ear begins as a little fold of skin at the side of the head. Tiny buds that eventually grow into arms and legs are forming. Fingers, toes and eyes are also forming.

The neural tube (brain, spinal cord and other neural tissue of the central nervous system) is well formed now. The digestive tract and sensory organs begin to develop too. Bone starts to replace cartilage. Your baby’s nervous system changes from an open neural tube to a brain and spinal cord. Nerves and muscles start working together. Your baby can move on its own, but it’s too soon for you to feel it.

The head is large in proportion to the rest of the body at this point. At about 6 weeks, a heartbeat can usually be detected. After the 8th week, healthcare providers refer to it as a fetus instead of an embryo.

By the end of the second month, the fetus is about 1 inch long and weighs about 1/30 of an ounce.

Month 3 (weeks 9 through 12)

The arms, hands, fingers, feet and toes are fully formed. At this stage, the fetus is starting to explore a bit by doing things like opening and closing its fists and mouth. Fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop and the external ears are formed. The beginnings of teeth are forming under the gums. The reproductive organs or Genitals start to grow, but it’s too early to tell by ultrasound whether you’re having a girl or a boy.

By the end of the third month, the fetus is fully formed. All the organs and limbs (extremities) are present , but not fully developed and will continue to develop in order to become functional.Your baby develops a digestive system, including intestines and kidneys and urinary systems are also working and the liver produces bile.

A soft skeleton is starting to grow.Your baby starts to look like a baby, with arms, legs, fingers, and toes. Their face gets eyes, ears, a nose, and mouth. A tongue and tooth buds grow. Eyelids cover your baby’s eyes, and by the end of the trimester, they even have fingernails.

At the end of the third month, the fetus is about 4 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce.

Since the most critical development has taken place, your chance of miscarriage drops considerably after three months.

So, mama are you happy experiencing how slowly slowly your little bundle of joy has came so far and completed it's first three months .Stay with me in this journey, and I will come back with another exciting blog about motherhood journey soon.

Till then...take care,

Bye!
